The perfect coconut holiday cocktail to get you in the festive holiday spirit. This Puerto Rican Coquito recipe is a healthier twist on a classic Christmas cocktail celebrated throughout Puerto Rico during the holidays.

Holiday cocktails are a fun way to get creative when celebrating the holiday season (responsibly) and often some of the best cocktails are those that have a long traditional history. When researching some of the most famous Christmas cocktails around the world, one of the most popular results that kept coming back to me was the traditional Puerto Rican Coquito, which if you have never experienced it before is a coconut-y twist on a classic eggnog. Since I’ve never been much of an eggnog fan (but love pretty much anything coconut), this classic Puerto Rican Coquito sounded like the perfect creamy cocktail that I could get on board with.

In Puerto Rico, Coquitos are the most popular Christmas cocktail enjoyed during the holidays and can be found in almost every home, bar, and restaurant. While the traditional coquito recipe involves a combination of evaporated milk, condensed milk, coconut, spices, sometimes eggs, and rum, I wanted to try my hand at making this cocktail a little healthier and with some less processed ingredients, without compromising on the traditional flavor.

How To Make A Healthy Puerto Rican Coquito Recipe

Overall coquitos are really easy to make with only a few simple ingredients needed to make these decadently thick and creamy cocktails. All you need are a few warming spices like cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg, and of course your favorite coconut rum (which you can exclude for a non alcoholic option).

To get the creamy consistency of the coquito most traditional recipes call for evaporated milk and sweetened condensed milk, both of which I personally like to avoid since they often aren’t sourced from the best quality dairy.

Instead you can choose to use full-fat coconut milk or whole milk kefir to replace the evaporated milk, which is what I opted for in this recipe. I personally love this kefir from Green Valley Creamery, which is what I used to replace the evaporated milk without compromising on that delicious creamy flavor.

In addition to evaporated milk, most traditonal Puerto Rican Coquito Recipes will also be made using sweetened condensed milk, but for those looking for a somewhat healthier option or a lactose free/dairy free option it can be hard to find a suitable replacement.

After many years of not being able to make recipes because I couldn’t find a good enough condensed milk alternative I finally decided to make one of my own. While the process of making your own coconut based condensed milk does take time and patience, the result is a great healthier substitute for traditional condensed milk.

How To Make Homemade Coconut Condensed Milk

  1. To make homemade coconut condensed milk simply start by combining full-fat coconut milk, maple syrup, vanilla extract, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg to a saucepan over medium heat and bring to a boil.

  2. Once boiling reduce heat to a simmer and sir consistently for ~30 minutes.

  3. After 30 minutes or so, remove from heat and pour the condensed coconut milk into a jar and place in the refrigerator to cool completely. Once you are ready to make your coquito recipe or any other recipe simply use the condensed coconut milk in place of regular condensed milk.
